Biotechnology (especially genetic engineering, including the production of transgenics) is the purposeful
manipulation of genetic material (DNA) and organisms, in a manner which forces the organism to
exceed the boundaries that nature would, in all probability, observe. Genetic engineering includes
genetic rearrangement within an organism. Transgenics is the transfer of genetic material between
species. In all its expressions, biotechnology is the deliberate reconstruction of life forms to serve
extrinsic purposes.
